Refill or exchange a grill tank?
- Refilling is usually cheaper. You pay only for the propane that goes in, and a refill station fills a 20 lb tank to the full 20 lb (about 4.7 gallons).
- Exchange tanks usually hold only 15 lb (about 3.5 gallons), a quarter less than a full refill, and you hand back any propane left in your old tank.
- Exchange is quicker. Exchange cages are in more places and open longer, and you get a tank that has been checked and is in date.
- Check the date on your tank. A cylinder must be requalified 12 years after the manufacture date stamped on its collar before it can be refilled. Exchanging an expired tank is the easy way round it.
Filling a home propane tank
- Order at 20 to 30%. Most suppliers ask you to call before the gauge drops below 20%, so a 500-gallon tank usually takes about 300 gallons.
- Bigger deliveries cost less per gallon. Many suppliers charge more, or add a fee, for small deliveries.
- Ask about pre-buy and budget plans before the cold weather, when demand pushes prices up. See when to buy.
- Not sure how long a fill will last? Try the propane tank calculator, or see propane tank sizes.

Common questions
How much does it cost to fill a 20 lb propane tank?
A 20 lb tank holds about 4.7 gallons of propane. At this week's U.S. average home delivery price of $2.73 a gallon that is about $13, before tax. Refill stations usually charge more per gallon than home delivery, so multiply their posted price by 4.7 to see what you'll pay.
How many gallons are in a 20 lb propane tank?
About 4.7 gallons when full, because propane weighs about 4.24 lb a gallon. An exchange tank filled to 15 lb holds about 3.5 gallons.
How many gallons are in a 100 lb propane tank?
About 23.6 gallons when full. At this week's U.S. average that's about $64 of propane.
How much does it cost to fill a 500-gallon propane tank?
A 500-gallon tank is filled to 80%, or 400 gallons. Refilling it from 20% takes about 300 gallons, about $819 at this week's U.S. average of $2.73 a gallon, before tax. Filling it from empty would cost about $1,092. Prices vary a lot by state; see the table above.
Is it cheaper to refill or exchange a propane tank?
Refilling is usually cheaper. A refill fills your tank to the full 20 lb and you pay only for what goes in, while most exchange tanks hold only 15 lb and you give up any propane left in your old tank. Exchange is quicker and handy if your tank is out of date.
Why is my propane price higher than the average?
The average is for home deliveries before tax. Small deliveries, refill stations and exchange cages cost more per gallon, and suppliers add tax, delivery and tank rental fees.
