Propane Tank Sizes and the Cost to Fill Each One

Common propane tank sizes, how much each really holds at an 80% fill, and what it costs to fill.

Propane is stored as a liquid under pressure. Large tanks are filled to about 80% of their capacity, leaving room for the liquid to expand as it warms. That's why a 500-gallon tank only takes about 400 gallons. Small portable cylinders are sold by weight; propane weighs about 4.2 lb per gallon.
