What the ZIP lookup shows
We match your ZIP code to its state and show that state's average residential price from the U.S. Energy Information Administration's weekly survey of heating oil and propane dealers. It's the most reliable public figure available, updated every Wednesday during the heating season.
- It's an average, not a dealer quote. Prices between dealers in the same town can differ a lot, so it's worth calling two or three. Each state page has a quote checker to see whether a price you've been given is fair.
- Prices exclude tax and delivery fees. Expect your bill to be a little higher than the average.
- Not every state is surveyed for both fuels. Heating oil is surveyed mainly in the Northeast and Midwest, where it's widely used; propane covers more states.
Next, see how long your oil will last, how long a propane tank lasts, or what a delivery costs with the cost calculator.

Common questions
Why can't I see my town's exact price?
The official survey publishes state and regional averages, not town or dealer prices. Local prices vary with each dealer's costs, delivery distance and how much you order, so the state average is the best guide to whether a quote is reasonable.
How do I find the cheapest heating oil or propane near me?
Call several local dealers and ask for their price per gallon for your usual delivery size, paying by cash or check, which is often cheaper than card. Compare each quote with your state average using the quote checker on your state's page. Ask about budget plans and pre-buy prices too.
How often are these prices updated?
Every week from October to March, usually on Wednesday, and monthly in summer. This page updates automatically.
