About HeatingFuelPrices.com

HeatingFuelPrices.com publishes average residential heating oil and propane prices for the United States, its regions and every state covered by the official weekly survey, so homeowners can see at a glance whether prices are rising or falling and whether a quote is fair.

Where the prices come from

All prices come from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) State Heating Oil and Propane Program. EIA surveys heating oil and propane dealers every week from October through March and once a month (the second Monday) from April through September, and publishes the results each Wednesday during the heating season. EIA data is in the public domain.

  • Prices are averages in dollars per gallon and exclude taxes.
  • States appear when EIA publishes a price for them. Heating oil is surveyed mainly in the Northeast and Midwest, where it is widely used; propane covers more states.
  • The previous week's figure can be revised by EIA when late reports arrive. We republish the latest figures each update.

How the site is updated

The site checks for new EIA data automatically and rebuilds every page — prices, changes, charts and cost tables — whenever a new release is published.
